With its particular play of light, the night has long been a source of never-ending inspiration for photographers. The Hungarian photographer Brassaï was one of the first to develop this subtle and precise art. In the 1920s, he managed to capture the essence of the Parisian nightlife. Since then, this photographic technique has been picked up many times and in many different styles. Darkness and lengthening shadows allow the imagination free reign. Stars, as well as the moonlight, bring a radically different atmosphere to one and the same location, which becomes more dreamlike. In the city, neon lights dazzle, disturbing the calm of the night. In photography, we speak of “light art”, where light is the main medium of expression. You can admire this technique in photographs of Tokyo or Hong-Kong by artist Jörg Dickmann. These shot offers views from above over the sparkling skyscrapers in the blue of the night. Paris, the City of Light, never ceases to inspire Vincent Garnier. This French photographer loves to capture the play of reflections on water. He captures cities from a distance and “copies” the colourful glow they create in the motionless waters of the rivers or inlets that surround them. He works from all angles in order to observe urbanity in a thousand different ways: aerial views, low-angle shots, zooming in on building windows, the pastel of a sunrise or the black of a moonless night... He varies his points of view along with the moments. Through the lens of Franck Bohbot , the city lays itself bare. He observes the architecture and the way it picks up light. His dreamy light art transports the spectator and seems to open up onto an almost motionless and poetic world. In colour or in black and white, night photography conveys the utmost subtlety and melancholy. Find YellowKorner’s most beautiful night photographs in this collection.
