About the artwork

Jon Wyatt travelled to China in 2012 to photograph the Huang Mountains, or Huangshan, one of the most famous sites in the country. Huangshan is a mountain range in southern Anhui, a province in eastern China, consisting of 72 granite peaks that cover a surface area of over 300 m2. Known as ?the first mountain situated under heaven?, it also has a reputation for its fog, which hovers spectacularly over its summits. For centuries, it has inspired many writers and artists, who venerate it as an important cultural and spiritual symbol. Classified as UNESCO global heritage, the site is unfortunately undergoing a phenomenon of privatisation for economic reasons. The photographer sources the inspiration for his art in traditional Chinese ink drawings and aims to highlight the growing gulf separating the Chinese nation from its landscape, which was once venerated as the inspiration for a collective national identity.
