About the artwork

Alma is able to make a setting even more beautiful. From a shot that initially seems anodyne, such as a tree or a rice field, this Portuguese artist manages to create another world, transforming photography into abstract art. The viewer has to make an effort to understand what is being depicted, but once the effort made, they enter the world of the photographer, as if gaining access to a world that is almost set apart. A world reminiscent of zen gardens and in which each photo is a call to meditation.

The artist

Alma is the pseudonym of a photographer who started taking photos in 2001 while he was still at university. Once he had completed his degree in communication science, Alma picked up his backpack and left to travel around the world. Of course, he had his camera with him and took every opportunity to use it: “I want to share the magnificent scenes that I witness" he says. Through careful work on the black and whites, as well as on light and composition, he enhances these scenes and manages to give them an enigmatic air. It must be said that Alma is a great fan of abstract art and is highly influenced by Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto, known for his minimalist black-and-white shots. Alma has also been influenced by the artists of the Land Art movement, who use nature as a medium for their art. These references are clearly visible in his photos, and their objective is to gain access to another world: “For each of my photos, says the photographer, I m looking to create a situation in which the observer can become immersed and begin dreaming."  ...
