About the artwork

This photograph was taken during the ?Holi? festival organised every spring in India, and particularly in the region of Braj Bhoomi. It shows the festivalgoers assembled in Barsana, one of the festival?s key sites. Singing and dancing to traditional music while showering one another with liquid paints or colourful pigments, they come to celebrate the victory of good over evil and the triumph of devotion. Here, the festival is in full swing, and it becomes difficult to make out individual faces, since everyone is covered in paint from head to toe and crammed tightly together. Here and there, pink, green or yellow clouds escape from the compact and unified cortege. Through the use of a high angle and close framing, Jagjit Singh nonetheless manages to extract himself from the crowd, without losing the excitement and tumult of the bustling crowd.
