About the artwork

While Bernd and Hilla Becher, the initiators of the New Objectivity, dedicate their work to photographing industrial installations, French photographer Franck Bohbot experiments with an equally exacting protocol that enables him to draw up an inventory of the urban landscapes he travels through. The systematic frontal and centred view of his subjects offer a documentary dimension based on typologies. It is precisely this systematism and the notion of the overview that confers an artistic and majestic dimension to the photographer's works. The photographer's external gaze lends a monumental dimension to these sites, which are transformed into singular and captivating spaces, at once sociologically, historically, and aesthetically. On his nocturnal explorations in the captivating city of New York to complete the Light On series, he created this photograph of a tattoo centre with its stunning neon sign.

Architecture is everywhere, in every city, from megalopolises to the tiniest of villages, I photograph architecture because I am passionate about the act of documenting buildings, interiors, and the soul of a neighbourhood with my eyes.
