About the artwork

The series of photographs by Barbara de Jonghe represent abstract visions of landscapes. The artist sources her inspiration in the meditative art of Mark Rothko, famous for having developed ?Colorfield Painting?. The Russian painter expresses himself by means of colour, which he paints on his canvases in blocks with uncertain borders. These shifting surfaces enable him to attain a particularly sensitive spiritual dimension. By exploring the limits of light and its movement, Barbara de Jonghe applies herself with the same discipline in her photographs. Her abstractions are based on her own impressions. Introspective, pure and minimalist, they invite spectators to meditate. They are therefore not called upon to question what they see, but how they feel as they discover these kinds of images. Stripped of their real meaning, Barbara de Jonghe endows her landscapes with an imaginary and poetic dimension.
