The artist

At the outset of this story, there was a shared love of travel. A call to adventure for one, an escape for the other. After growing up on the Mongolian steppes, Tuul moved to Paris in 2000 to start university studies in culture. She thus discovered photography and decided to make it her career. Her nomadic origins led her to choose reporting. As for Bruno Morandi, he was destined for a more peaceful life. The son of a Norman mother and a Tuscan father, he spent every summer of his childhood in Italy. After making a brilliant start to his architectural studies, he left for Nepal for two months at the age of 18 and became a guide for Nouvelles Frontières. A professional photographer from 1990 onwards, he works with the international press (National Geographic US, Figaro Magazine, Géo France and Germany, Grands Reportages). His images were selected by the HSBC and BNP Paribas banks for their advertising campaigns and have also been the subject of dozens of books, including “Nepal: Colour and Light” (2001), “Eternal Tuscany” (2002) and “Impressions of Rajasthan” (2003).  ... TUUL ET BRUNO MORANDI

About the artwork

Great fans of Asia, the photographers never tire of exploring the natural treasures found on the continent. Their favourite countries remain Nepal, where Bruno Morandi speaks the language, and Mongolia, where Tuul is from and where she likes to roam across the immense steppe. The reports that they produce are not however only invitations to travel, they also encourage us to meditate on the fragile beauty of our environment, whether it be human, natural, or cultural. Colour dominates and the artists take great pride in using it as a vital element of their images. Specialists of the vast Mongolian territory, here, they provide us with a magnificent image of it. Expanses of ice stretching as far as the Gobi desert, governed by nomadic tribes, Tuul and Bruno Morandi followed in the footsteps of the massive nomadic cavalry of Genghis Khan in the 13th century, which razed but also federated past nations. In this image, a berkutchi (falconer) practices eagle hunting. There are only a few hundred Kazakhs left who have fled to the province of Bayan-Ölgii in Mongolia.
