About the artwork

Jefflin develops a personal body of work dedicated to landscapes in black and white. The long nocturnal exposure times or shots in attenuated lighting heighten the contrasts of textures and materials, giving rise to a masterly and refined chiaroscuro rhetoric – the signature of his minimalist work. Whether it be a natural or architectural form, one that is already rather dramatic, it is later pared down with its lines becoming free form. Description in Jefflin’s work is less important than suggestion: he wants the spectator to be able to dream before his images. He identifies with Alfred Stieglitz: “An artist strives to express their inner world by using objects from the outside world as symbols. It’s not what you capture that counts, but the way you interpret it and that will make it shift from an instant snapshot to a work of art.” Autumn Tree was taken in October 2016 in South Korea. At first, the photographer only wanted to capture the tree but a child appeared in the frame and enabled him to create this enchanting image.
