About the artwork

Jefflin has developed a personal corpus dedicated to landscapes devoid of any human presence. Humans are nevertheless intimated in a phantom way, by the traces they leave on territories. The long nocturnal exposure times or shots in attenuated lighting heighten the contrasts of textures and materials, giving rise to a masterly and refined chiaroscuro rhetoric – the signature of his minimalist work. Whether it be a natural or architectural form, one that is already rather dramatic, it is later pared down with its lines becoming free form. Description in Jefflin’s work is less important than suggestion: he wants the spectator to be able to dream before his images. He identifies with Alfred Stieglitz: “An artist strives to express their inner world by using objects from the outside world as symbols. It’s not what you capture that counts, but the way you interpret it and that will make it shift from an instant snapshot to a work of art.” Icelandic Foss No.19 was created in September 2016 in Iceland. It is a rare colour image by the photographer and seeks to reveal the magic of the Nordic landscapes.
