About the artwork

On a visit to the island of Itsukushima in Japan, Tuul and Morandi could not ignore the Shintoist sanctuary it is home to. Renowned for its entrancing beauty, this sacred site is guarded by a traditional gate: the famous ‘grand torii’. Erected in 1875, it measures no less than sixteen metres high. Its imposing bright red silhouette quickly caught the eye of the artist couple, who sought to emphasise its impressive grandeur and mystical energy.
