About the artwork

Laurent Dequick once again moves away from the traditional representation that we have of landscapes around us in order to present a highly poetic vision that borrows from the Cubist movement. On his numerous escapades all over the world, he has captured all kinds of monuments, venues, and sites that are the incontestable witnesses of history and of the radiating influences of the countries that he travels through. This photograph belongs to the series dedicated to Sweden and particularly its capital, Stockholm. Nicknamed the "Venice of the North", it stretches over several islands in the Baltic Sea. From the flamboyant Royal Dramatic Theatre to the Vasa Bridge, the photographer allows us to discover various facets of the city and enables us, on this occasion, to travel alongside him. The urban freneticism and hyperactivity that he likes to represent are expressed by a condensation of shooting angles that draw the spectator's eye. Through this interplay of superpositions, Laurent Dequick notably evokes Marcel Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase in which the expressiveness of the lines reveals the movement within the painting.
