About the artwork

When we contemplate a photograph by Jared Christopher Martin, we don't know which Saint to pray to, given the considerable profusion of details. Is this a photograph, a painting, a diorama or a freeze frame from a film mid-screening. The American artist borrows the definition of his abstract style from the Cubist movement that revolutionised the notion of representation. He effectively designs a single image based on a multiplicity of small photographs taken on the fly, representing all of our little perceptions, as though time was being compressed, along with the narrative and even memories. The former actor certainly has a lot of memories. The image Staircases was produced between 2014 and 2015 and is reminiscent of Marcel Duchamp's painting Nude Descending a Staircase. A skilful combination of Cubism and Futurism, the painting alludes to Marey and Muybridge's chronophotographs that deconstructed movement, and hence to the cinema as well.

The artist

Born in the 1940s in Manhattan, the American Jared Christopher Martin is above all renowned for his talented cinematographic career. Former flatmate of the director Brian De Palma, he has acted in many films and television series, including Dallas, The War of the Worlds, and The Fantastic Journey. He discovered photography during his studies at Columbia University but also on the sets of film shoots that he worked on throughout his acting and directing career. Back in the day, he took a great deal of photographs, one of which won the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) award. Today, the artist continues to take many pictures and is also the author of several photographic essays, Dazhengzhao: 1 000 Year Old Village, Letter From Zibo and Caprivi. Since 2011, his photographs have been exhibited in Atlanta, Portland and New York.  ... See more See less
