The artist

Painting with light using photography. This is surely the right way to interpret the pictorial work of Swiss artist Michel Norbou Tardy. After working for many years in the publishing sector as a director of collections and producing albums for famous photographers, he now devotes his time to his artistic work. Born in 1958, living in Geneva, Michel Norbou Tardy has shared his time between meditation and photography for over 11 years. His images of forest landscapes are contemplative invitations to daydream that are in large part inspired by his reading of philosophy and phenomenology in particular. He notably refers to Guy de Maupassant when he talks about his work: "Realists, when they are artists, will seek not to show us the banal photography of life, but to give us a more complete, captivating, and convincing vision than reality itself." Inviting the "beholder" to dream and marvel, his images have been the subject of various publications: Tantric Meditations and Meditate with Trees, as well as screenings on the themes of Reality is only ever a provisional form of the real and Contemplative photographs.  ... About the artwork

Was Michel Norbou Tardy's pictorial photography inspired by the photographic painting of German photographer Gerhard Richter? The blurred and silky effect that dominates the artist's images seems to play on duality and transpose the photography into a painting in which all visual clarity is destabilised. The intense colours within the image, obliterating our usual perceptual relationship, reinforce this optical experience. It is like wandering off into a dream, into this mysterious element that escapes us, fascinates us, and moves us deeply. By capturing the light over the course of the seasons, revealing the enchanting character of nature, Michel Norbou Tardy invites the spectator to enter a contemplative, unusual world, in which the ordinary becomes extraordinary. The spirituality and beauty that pulsates in the photographs of the Magic Forest series invite us to encounter them at the right place and the right time, and to live in the present moment.
