About the artwork

Although Thomas H.P Jerusalem ? MUTE is fascinated by street photography, he equally enjoys telling stories by creating provocative narrative images. These highlight the photography of the sixties and early seventies. At once familiar and strange, his stagings haunt the spectator?s gaze. Mysterious, they thus raise more questions than they provide answers and leave us in suspense. Thomas H.P Jerusalem ? MUTE?s female models are usually placed in surrealist environments ? devastated, displaced, and otherworldly lands. Their appearances are unusual, combined with a sense of irony and sarcasm. Dunes was created in 2016 on the banks of the Michigan River, lndiana, one of the first Great Lakes of North America. The saturated colours and cosy atmosphere of the staging plunges the spectator into the early 1900s, the Victorian era.

The artist

Thomas H.P. Jerusalem – MUTE is a German photographer. After living for several years in Frankfurt and London, he moved to the suburbs of Chicago in 2004 where he still lives today. Growing up in West Germany during the Cold War with his father’s oversized books from the New York Photo Academy had a considerable influence on his narrative style. It is most likely the many hours that he spent with his father, an amateur photographer, watching him develop his own images under a dim red light, that sparked his passion for imagery. Thomas H.P. Jerusalem – MUTE began his career in street photography and photojournalism, two very expressive methods that forged his sensitive approach. He now works in fashion and undertakes prestigious collaborations with international magazines: ESTETICA, VOGUE / Italian PhotoVogue, FHM, Dark Beauty, DODHO, and Kaltblut.  ... See more See less
