The artist

Jirawat Plekhongthu is a photographer of Thai origins, born in 1990. He became passionate about photography in his last year of studies in geology at the Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. The technical training he undertook was to be crucial in igniting his passion for images. He affirms that “nature itself is truly beautiful” and devotes his time to expressing its beauty, that of the flora and fauna around us. In 2015, Jirawat Plekhongthu won the “Editor’s Choice Award” of the 500px Competition with his photograph Blue Moment as well as third place at the Thailand National Awards in 2017, organised by Sony World Photography Awards. His images were also exhibited in Switzerland in 2016, and in London the following year.  ... See more See less

About the artwork

When Jirawat Plekhongthu was a boy, his father gave him a pet named ?Pla-kad?, which means ?Siamese fighting fish? in Thai, owing to its geographic origins, the former Siam later became Thailand. These unique fish are one of the most ancient domesticated fish species and are found in the vast stretches of water in Southeast Asia, the canals, paddy fields, and swamp plains. They are now sold at the open-air market of Chatuchak in Bangkok, which has made a name for itself as the epicentre of pisciculture. On the weekend, local fishermen, tourists, and street vendors selling local food all flock there. Through this photographic series The Elegant Siamese Fighting Fish begun in 2015, Jirawat Plekhongthu captures the elegance of these ornamental fish, highlighting the beauty of nature, the vivacity of the colours, and the majesty of their fins, which resemble large veils or spiked bristles.
