About the artwork

When Jirawat Plekhongthu was a boy, his father gave him a pet named “Pla-kad”, which means “Siamese fighting fish” in Thai, owing to its geographic origins, the former Siam later became Thailand. These unique fish are one of the most ancient domesticated fish species and are found in the vast stretches of water in Southeast Asia, the canals, paddy fields, and swamp plains. They are now sold at the open-air market of Chatuchak in Bangkok, which has made a name for itself as the epicentre of pisciculture. On the weekend, local fishermen, tourists, and street vendors selling local food all flock there. Through this photographic series The Elegant Siamese Fighting Fish begun in 2015, Jirawat Plekhongthu captures the elegance of these ornamental fish, highlighting the beauty of nature, the vivacity of the colours, and the majesty of their fins, which resemble large veils or spiked bristles.
