About the artwork

Intimately connected to New York, Vincent Garnier dedicated a previous series to the city, capturing the incessant energy of its activity, both day and night. Returning to the United States in 2015, on this occasion he took photographs of Chicago, the third largest city in the country, located on the banks of one of the five Great Lakes. When evoking Chicago, we inevitably think of its mafia stories under prohibition, its jazz and blues cabarets and its sports teams. Clearly, these images still adhere to the city, since American cinema loves to play on them. Yet the photographer's many nocturnal shots build up a grandiose panorama of the city. It is both a cultural hub, with the Chicago Theatre built in 1921, which was where musician Frank Sinatra performed, and a place of great architectural prowess, with its string of skyscrapers dominating the skyline and stretching off into the distance.
