About the artwork

After Pieles [Skins], in which Miguel Vallinas staged himself exercising various professions or mastering a number of ancestral traditions, came Segunda Pieles [Second Skins] in which taxidermied animals took the place of individuals, sporting sophisticated styles of dress. The third and final body of images Ceci n’est pas [This Is Not] completes the Spanish photographer’s series. This new collection is a series of surrealist images that reconsider the human form. Extending his previous work, it explores the deconstruction of identity. Ranging from cupcakes to pigs, the heads of the characters have been replaced by inanimate objects representing our thoughts, dreams, and desires. It is inspired by the work of René Magritte that ensnares the perception and expectations of the beholder by creating visual games and double meanings. Presenting the same humour as the Belgian painter, Miguel Vallinas questions our preconceived ideas regarding appearances in the face of social diktats. This image thus invites us to think about what is really there, what we think we are, what others think of us, what we would like to be, and what we truly are.
