About the artwork

While Bernd and Hilla Becher, the initiators of New Objectivity, dedicate their work to photographing industrial installations, Franck Bohbot experiments with an equally exacting protocol that enables him to draw up an inventory of the landscapes he travels through. The systematic frontal and centred view of his subjects offer a documentary dimension based on typologies. It is precisely this systematism and the notion of the overview that confers an artistic and majestic dimension to his works. Attracted by places of entertainment, the photographer paints a portrait of the second largest gambling city in the United States, after Las Vegas. Taken in 2014, his series Looking for Atlantic City explores the relationship between this opulent and carnivalesque site and the unique environment in which it is established, on the Atlantic coast. Reaching its apogee during the Golden Twenties, the resort city continues to boast its sumptuous decadence despite its decline in the sixties. Abandoned motels, shops, and casinos are dotted about the city, modulating an activity in recession and foreshadowing a bleak future.

Architecture is everywhere, in every city, from megalopolises to the tiniest of villages, I photograph architecture because I am passionate about the act of documenting buildings, interiors, and the soul of a neighbourhood with my eyes.
