About the artwork

Having travelled the length and breadth of the United States in their campervan, the atypical photographer couple Formento + Formento stage the American women that they meet on their travels. BJ and Richeille Formento have together developed the hidden story of these damsels in distress, set against a modern landscape, questioning the limits of the Land of the Free. Through the use of sophisticated lighting and the implicit and quasi-systematic violence of the scenes that they create, each of their photographs denounces an omnipresent tension, extending beyond the frame of the image, as though the photograph was a thriller caught in freeze-frame. The title of this image is based on the lyrics of the song ?America? by Simon & Garfunkel, taken from their album Bookends, released in 1968. The song describes the road trip of Simon and his girlfriend Kath across the United States, in search of the ideals lauded by the American dream.
