About the artwork

As though conducting a scientific experiment, Mina Teslaru subverts plant forms from their initial environment to create a new subjectivity. She arranges the flowers that she photographs against a neutral background, evoking the dissection tables of laboratories. Each flower is then deconstructed as though the artist wanted to remove the delicate petals one by one, take out the pistils, and cut up the leaves and stems that compose it. By photographing them frontally, under an extremely cold light, she succeeds in conferring breathtaking beauty to these natural subjects. The plants are sufficiently translucent for the light to infiltrate their contours and reveal new forms. With these still lifes evoking children's drawings, Mina Teslaru wishes to give her creations a pictorial, stylised effect, rather than producing purely figurative photographs.

The artist

Born in 1982 in Bucharest, Mina Teslaru is a self-taught Romanian photographer based in New York. Her childhood was steeped in the theatre, alongside talented actors, outrageous accessories and dusty old costumes. Her summers in Romania were punctuated by strolls along the banks of the Black Sea, with a plastic camera in hand. It was upon her arrival in New York in 2007 at the age of 24 that she fell under the charm of Coney Island, the main subject of her images. Many publications now pay tribute to her artistic work, which is not limited solely to the photographic medium; Mina Teslaru also produces light installations. Since 2010, she has participated in collective exhibitions in the states of New York and California. Her dreamlike images have only very recently been discovered in Europe, since Le Bon Marché in Paris dedicated an exhibition to her in 2015.  ... See more See less

CLAUDE DEGOUTTE

“The wall belongs to the ‘retards’, ‘inept’, ‘rebels’, ‘simpletons’, to all those with a big heart. It is the blackboard of the school of life,” says French-Hungarian artist Brassaï in his famous back Graffiti. A veritable ode to urban art, Brassaï’s reflection was to mark the a...
