About the artwork

An air of freedom floats over the boardwalk of Venice Beach, particularly around its legendary Skate Park. With the After School series, the French photographer pays tribute to his adoptive land, California, and its passion, skateboarding. The artist says his pictures tell the story “not only of skateboarding, but of a lifestyle, of boys and girls, transcendence, diversity, friendship, subcultures, wheels…”

The artist

Born in the suburb of Paris, Franck Bohbot set down his suitcases in 2013 in the borough of Brooklyn in New York. Since 2008, he has been recognised for his photographs in colour of urban scenes and public spaces. Fascinated by cinematic iconography, he focuses his creation around the relationship between individuals and architecture. Each series contains this same photographic intention: their enigmatic atmosphere, documentary approach, and timeless character evoke a cosy, dreamlike, and almost unfathomable space, as though taken straight from a dream. Franck Bohbot thus immortalises street scenes, swimming pools, libraries, basketball courts, museums, movie theatres, and fairgrounds, but also artists, athletes, or artisans. His works have been published in the prestigious New York Times Magazine, The Financial Times, National Geographic, Corriere Della Serra, Le Nouvel Observateur, and Les Inrockuptibles. He received the Prix International de Photographie in 2013 and the Prix Archifoto 2014.  ... See more See less

Architecture is everywhere, in every city, from megalopolises to the tiniest of villages, I photograph architecture because I am passionate about the act of documenting buildings, interiors, and the soul of a neighbourhood with my eyes.

CLAUDE DEGOUTTE

“The wall belongs to the ‘retards’, ‘inept’, ‘rebels’, ‘simpletons’, to all those with a big heart. It is the blackboard of the school of life,” says French-Hungarian artist Brassaï in his famous back Graffiti. A veritable ode to urban art, Brassaï’s reflection was to mark the a...
