About the artwork

Since Beno?t Lapray is persuaded that "a photograph must tell us a story", the utopian images that he produces are characterised by a narrative in which prehistoric animals suddenly emerge from the past and invade contemporary cities. For the series "The Widlife" (2016), the setting is the business district of La D?fense in Paris. This concrete jungle that is usually home to workers has made way for terrifying dinosaurs, and they are moving about freely as though this has been their natural habitat since the dawn of ages. Beno?t Lapray dazzles us with his mastery of settings, lighting and framing. In his photomontages, he restores the atmosphere of supernatural films and the spectators can easily imagine themselves projected in the midst of a film shoot. We are reminded of Jurassic Park by director Steven Spielberg, but also the spectacular stagings of photographer Gregory Crewdson.

The artist

Born in 1980, Benoît Lapray studied photography in Lyon. In 2006, he joined an advertising photography studio near Annecy, in the Haute-Savoie, France. Seeking inspiration in the sublime mountain settings that surround him, he started producing his own works in 2010: the series “The Quest for the Absolute” testifies to this period, staging super heroes from American Comics in grandiose landscapes. In 2014, he decided to move to Paris to pursue his activity as a photographer and photo retoucher.  ... See more See less
