About the artwork

The artistic work of Grégoire Cachemaille questions the heritage value of abandoned structures, not only from an architectural point of view, but also as testimonies to the history of the communities and powers that erected them. Shot in 2015, this picture belongs to the Subsidences series. It explores the slow process of dilapidation of deserted historic buildings, revealing the magic emerging before their fall. In this latest phase of their journey, stripped of their original context, the empty structures become objects of contemplation and introspection. The Moorish Palace #4 reveals one of the many rooms of a lavishly decorated Moorish Palace. This work of remembrance is reminiscent of the documentary style of the German objectivity photographers, Bernd and Hilla Becher, who specialised in photographing elements of the industrial landscape of the 1960s, frontally and in black and white.
