About the artwork

Boroe1, a young 23-year-old New Zealand artist, combines materials and styles to create his photos. He reinterprets the image of Marilyn Monroe by placing her “high-gloss” photo in the middle of a wall covered in graffiti and does not hesitate to play with Photoshop to give it the “Boroe Touch”. Graffiti often merges with calligraphy, particularly when he signs his name, and his style is constantly evolving.

The artist

Although he masters social networks like all young people his age (he is 23 years old), Boroe1 also knows their limits. He therefore takes care not to appear with his face revealed or under his real name. He gives slim to no information regarding his personal life: the only things we know are that he lives in New Zealand and works in the typography and digital design world. In short: only his artworks matter, which he very regularly publishes on Instagram (@boroe1). At 23, Boroe1 is a renowned graffiti artist just as comfortable with a calligraphy pen as with a can of spraypaint. For him, photography allows him to extend his art: “I want to give my photos new life by integrating several layers of paint or several textures,” he explains, “that’s my personal touch.” His photos combine materials, styles, or periods, with omnipresent lettering that encircles the original photo or that is sometimes the subject of the artwork. Boroe1 explains that he is heavily inspired by old photography, calligraphy, and music – particularly phonk, a rap style that emerged in the South of the USA in the nineties.  ... See more See less
