MORE INFORMATION ABOUT DELIVERY

The artist

A child prodigy who tried his hand at photography from the age of 14, Finnish photographer Antti Viitala began his career in advertising and fashion before setting off to travel all over the globe. The photographer ponders the power of nature, from Iceland to South Africa. He only works in natural light, combining the techniques of the old masters with a perfect mastery of new technologies in order to capture the most subtle details, textures, and shades in his pictures.  ... ANTTI VIITALA

About the artwork

The recent work by the Finnish photographer in the "Seascapes" series proves to be a poetic observation of the South African coast off the coast of the Camps Bay beach near the city of Cape Town. The tides in intense shades advance and withdraw powerfully in each of the images that compose the series. At the horizon, they concede their role of underlining the stormy skies towering above them. Long exposure times are used to capture the unfolding of the waves as they come hurtling against the shore. In the midst of this hypnotic landscape, the photographer must stay immobile for several solitary hours, waiting for just the right autumnal lighting to sculpt the texture of the stormy waters and sand. Minimalist and almost identical, the various marine views captured by Antti Vittala\'s lens plunge the spectator into the core of a powerful and boundless natural world and are reminiscent of the dramatic landscapes of French photographer Gustave Le Gray.
