The artist

Born in 1969 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Billie Sue?s interest in photography only manifested itself at an advanced stage of her career, when she was confronted with various cultures on her numerous business trips across the globe. The trigger was most likely her attraction to historical art, which has considerably influenced her work, characteristics from which can be found in the stagings of her models, in her choice of decors, and in her heartfelt love of portraiture. A self-taught photographer, Billie Sue decided not to undertake academic training to avoid losing herself in study and to instead use this free time to practise photography in her own right. Taken in 2016, ?Feathers? is the first series that the photographer revealed to the public and which, given the admirable success she received, enabled her to carve out a select niche for herself among major photographers.  ... About the artwork

The fruit of an aesthetic combining innocence, extravagance, and the fantastic, Billie Sue?s images portray a young woman in search of her identity. Part-woman, part-bird, she seems to transform into a chimera: a hybrid fantasy creature from Greek mythology. ?Photography allows me to escape into a world of marvels, where anything is possible and there are no rules to what is culturally acceptable,? affirms Billie Sue, talking about her first series ?Feathers? which this image is derived from. Produced in 2016 in New York, Raven bears witness to the relationship that links birds to humans.
