About the artwork

Olivier Kauffmann lives on the Mediterranean coast. He loves the sea, long exposure times, and digital retouching. This results in rather surreal photos that always appear to be in motion, despite their affirmed minimalist style. “I also work on light,” he explains, “and I think that my photos must be interpretive of reality or abstract. In this way, I come close to painting unintentionally.”

The artist

First, there is the sea. “It has always been my passion; I pretty much only photograph the sea!” photographer Olivier Kauffman laughs. After a childhood spent on the Atlantic Coast, he now lives by “the Mediterranean”, near Montpellier. Next, there is architecture, his original profession. He worked for many long years as an architect before dedicating himself gradually to photography. He draws on this experience for each of his images: “Town planning enables me to learn and understand the sites I’ll photograph,” he explains. “Knowledge of the weather that comes from yachting allows me to know when to photograph and the scenography that architecture taught me is palpable in my framings.” Digital processing does the rest. His photos are an invitation to meditate and take strolls; he affirms that they are “decorative, aesthetic, and often minimalist.” His influences are mainly found among painters: Pierre Soulages, Yves Klein, Marc Rothko, or Maggi Puig. “My work is above all the search for a patch of beautiful colours, monochromes or multi-coloured patches, which stand out on a wall,” he explains.  ... ALFREDO SANCHEZ

Alfredo Sanchez was not predestined for photography. Born in Mexico in 1954, he studied law and took up a career in the private sector. “My free time was spent playing tennis, horse riding, and let’s not forget my favourite pastime: photography,” he says. Much later, towards the ...

Ruslan Bolgov was born in 1974 in Klaipeda, Lithuania, on the shores of the Baltic Sea. His earliest photographs were taken as a teenager, but he didn’t take the experience very far at the time. It wasn’t until the end of his studies in economics and finance that he seriously app...

CLAUDE DEGOUTTE

“The wall belongs to the ‘retards’, ‘inept’, ‘rebels’, ‘simpletons’, to all those with a big heart. It is the blackboard of the school of life,” says French-Hungarian artist Brassaï in his famous back Graffiti. A veritable ode to urban art, Brassaï’s reflection was to mark the a...
