About the artwork

Belgian photographer Norbert Ghisoland was so prolific that over 45 000 photographs were found in his family attic in Frameries, Belgium. During the years 1920-1930, he photographed the mining population of the Borinage region and represented, through his portraits, the wealth of the owners and the poverty of the working class. Besides the sociological, historical, and ethnological interest of his photographs, his formal rigour was to lend a density to them that would later move his descendants and command the respect of the world of photography, to the extent that his work was recently shown at the 55th Venice Biennale.
