About the artwork

Julie and I were off the coast of Tokyo, in the Pacific Ocean, around the small volcanic island of Mikura Jima, where 200 wild dolphins live. After long minutes of interaction with one group, one dolphin started to play with Guillaume. Julie took the camera and took spontaneous photographs of an improvised dance between this dolphin and Guillaume.

The artist

Guillaume Néry is a French freediving champion and an expert in depth. He can dive with a single intake of breath down to -126 m under the surface of the sea. A multiple international record holder, twice a world champion, he recently distinguished himself by accidentally achieving the deepest dive in history, at -139 m deep. To share his world with the widest possible audience, Guillaume dives with his camera and airtight cover in order to bring back a unique testimony of his experience from the depths. Often, his wife Julie Gautier accompanies him, sometimes as his muse, and sometimes taking hold of the camera to capture a moment, or an encounter between Guillaume and a creature from the abyss. Guillaume's quest goes well beyond that of mere sport. Combining aestheticism, performance and exploration, he practises his discipline like an art: his own form of art of living.  ...
