About the artwork

In Alexander Schönberg’s black-and-white photographs, we find a whole vocabulary of urban melancholy: unique modernist and brutalist architecture, imprecise horizons, blurred by clouds of mist, and many other grey areas that invade the picture plane. Fascinated by his native city, Alexander Schönberg never tires of capturing Hamburg and documenting the bridges that overlook it. There are around 2 500 of them, more than the cities of London, Amsterdam, and Venice combined. Taken in 2017, this image documents the Alte Harburger Elbbrücke inaugurated on 30 September 1899 and that is, these days, mainly used by pedestrians. The romantic landscapes of Alexander Schönberg are vanitas or memento mori that constantly refer to the emptiness that haunts them.
