About the artwork

Vinci Weng has experimented with several disciplines throughout his artistic career spanning over thirty years. Today, he mainly works with paint and still and animated digital images in large formats. His practice of contemporary photography combines various approaches: it is fundamentally connected to traditional techniques, but also computer technology and methods of painting, which convey new ways of seeing and thinking. In the Wonderland series from which this picture originates, Vinci Weng combines narrative and non-narrative visual styles to create his virtual collages. These reinvent imaginative modern scenes, using high-resolution images (characters, houses, trees) and landscapes with multiple perspectives. To obtain this result, he takes several hundreds of photographs, creating a seamless montage that gives the dreamlike illusion of capturing a dramatic moment in time.

The artist

A photographer of Taiwanese origins, Vinci Weng was born in 1970 in Taipei. He obtained his doctorate from the School of Arts ad Digital Industries at University of East London, UK. Upon his return to his native country, he worked as a deputy professor in the design and communication department of Shih-Chien University in Taipei, later teaching in the fine arts department of Kaohsiung Normal University. He is currently an associate professor at the Chinese Culture University, Taipei. His research into digital art, experimental animation, and contemporary photography has enabled him to participate in many international exhibitions and to be mentioned in the book Best of Photography published by Photographer's Forum Magazine in 2014. His work has also garnered several prestigious awards, notably first prize at the Chromatic Awards, as well as the Silver & Bronze Awards of International Photographer of the Year 2017.  ...
