About the artwork

With its extremely high population density of 130,000 person per km2, Mong Kok is referred as the busiest district in the world. It is characterized by a blending of old and new multi-story buildings, with shops and restaurants at street level and commercial or residential units above. Mong Kok preserves its traditional characteristics with an array of markets, small shops, and food stalls that have already disappeared from other areas in Hong Kong over the past several decades of economic developments. In this photograph we can see the famous street market of Fa Yuen street which has been depicted in several Hong Kong movies. Nicolas highlights here the high activity of this district which makes the crowd of people literally surrounded by shops and neon signs.
