About the artwork

Seeking a subtle balance between reality and fiction, Fang Tong leads us into the depths of her dreams, into the stirrings of a story that she has written herself. The Chinese photographer finds inspiration in the worlds of cinema and fashion. Her works are inventive and particularly well thought-out, scripting models whose absence of expression often reflects their solitude within the setting. While a woman balances on a springboard, ready to dive into the calm waters of a motel swimming pool, a young man observes her attentively. Is it her beauty that attracts him? Her unexpected presence? The atmosphere is peaceful but the characters seem lost in their thoughts. This photograph bears similarities to the works of American painter David Hockney or Stephen Shore’s Uncommon Places series, celebrating the everyday life of America in the 1970s. Taken from the Love Illusion series, this image from 2014 was created at an outdoor pool in Vancouver, Canada.
