About the artwork

The German artist Bernhard Hartmann owes his success to his dazzling representations of historical buildings, highly symbolic and entirely dedicated to art and culture. He also examines, over the course of his travels, the meaning and value as heritage of old, abandoned buildings, as he does in his 2014 Havana series. La Guarida, shown in this photograph, is the city's most famous paladar (private restaurant). A veritable shrine for lovers of Cuban cinema, it was the setting for the film Fresa y Chocolate, directed by Tom?s Guti?rrez Alea, which was nominated for an Oscar in 1994. The original decor has been preserved and the marble staircase still stands majestically at the centre of the building. Bernhard Hartmann's camera renders it eternal, magnifying dust, cracks and aging decorations through his use of extremely wide angles.
