About the artwork

A major environmental activist, Christian Vizl aims to elicit love and empathy for submarine life. Since his beginnings in 2011, he has captured some sublime moments, full of beauty and poetry, which the waters of the world offer. Dedicating his time mainly to this environment, he feels a deep sense of connection but is unfortunately witness to its ever-worsening devastation. Overfishing, pollution, plastics, radiation, climate changes, acidification and many other human pressures threaten the very essence of the ocean and its species, threatened with extinction. Christian Vizl is persuaded that photography serves humanity and can initiate change. He namely cites American biologist Sylvia Earle: “no blue, no green, if the oceans die, we die too.” This colourful image captures the exceptional flora of the crystalline waters of the cenote Nicte-Ha near Tulum, in the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico
