About the artwork

These jellyfish inhabit a saltwater lake and have lost their ability to sting. Jellyfish are stinging animals in the phylum Cnidaria, related to corals and sea anemones. They include typical jellyfish (scyphozoans), box jellyfish (cubozoans) and hydroids (hydrozoans). There are also many non-stinging gelatinous animals, including comb-jellies, salps and some mollusks. Members of all of these groups feed on tiny floating animals known collectively as zooplankton. All gelatinous animals can be challenging to photograph, since light passes through their bodies. Often, photographing jellies with the sun or strong surface light passing through them, provides the best results.
