The artist

“David’s work is characterised both by his environmental and artistic ambitions. This domain requires both scuba diving skills and very specific experience in underwater photography. There are many constraints involved in the aquatic environment. Under the water, the refraction of light, but also the depth, opacity of the water, and microscopic algae, cause the colours to be significantly altered. Despite these constraints, the photographer manages to capture the forms, textures and colours, and to create compositions akin to paintings.  ... See more See less

About the artwork

These jellyfish inhabit a saltwater lake and have lost their ability to sting. Jellyfish are stinging animals in the phylum Cnidaria, related to corals and sea anemones. They include typical jellyfish (scyphozoans), box jellyfish (cubozoans) and hydroids (hydrozoans). There are also many non-stinging gelatinous animals, including comb-jellies, salps and some mollusks. Members of all of these groups feed on tiny floating animals known collectively as zooplankton. All gelatinous animals can be challenging to photograph, since light passes through their bodies. Often, photographing jellies with the sun or strong surface light passing through them, provides the best results.
