About the artwork

Like a collector, Jean-Paul Espaignet amasses photographs taken on the spot, in the course of his cultural wanderings in prestigious museums and institutions. This composition was produced in 2015 at the FIAC, the International Contemporary Art Fair that invests the halls of the Grand Palais in Paris with its magnificent glass roof. The photographer produces a mise-en-abyme, since the subjects that he captures are both artworks and his own photographs. When looking at his work, the spectator sees a spectator that is himself looking at a painting. Each photograph taken individually thus has its own graphic significance but is also part of a dynamic ensemble. An individual "the spectator" appears recurrently, often placed at the front of the image but always in shadow. Like the silhouette of an extra in a film shoot, this presence contrasts with the animated space around it. The serial nature of the work, the accentuation of colours, and the juxtaposition of a single subject are reminiscent of the compositions of Andy Warhol.
