The artist

Jorge de la Torriente is an American photographer dedicated to the creation of minimalist and modern images. He has garnered numerous international awards, including the Hasselblad Masters Prize in 2018 for his remarkable aerial photography. Born in Miami in 1971, he began his artistic career as an architect after studying at the prestigious Cornell University in New York state. His artistic style is strongly influenced by his initial professional experience as a designer, which he practised for over fifteen years. Its slow process of construction and limited creativity led to Jorge de la Torriente turning his attention to another medium – photography – to further explore his interest in art and assuage his love of travel. Captured on the American continent and in the wide Atlantic Ocean, his landscape photography enables the spectator to appreciate the simplicity of nature while experiencing its immensity.  ... JORGE DE LA TORRIENTE

About the artwork

With this series that he created on Cuba, Jorge de la Torriente immortalises the typical streets of Havana and focuses on the life of the locals in the midst of the beauty and decadence of the buildings around them. El Faro was taken in May 2015. The façades photographed are considered a scenic ensemble where people live, becoming the actors of the their own lives. Jorge de la Torriente’s passion for photography and love of travel go hand in hand. His images do not document places, but instead provide interpretations of them. He strives to alter our perspective on the ways in which we perceive our immediate environment. Inspired by the old masters, he also blurs the line between painting and photography, notably thanks to the use of long exposure times and a simplified colour palette. “My goal is not to create something unnatural but something that the spectator can believe in,” he affirms.
