About the artwork

For Swiss photographer Alex Teuscher, Hong Kong and New York are “the most photogenic cities ever.” Here, he shows them in a very different way. He presents Hong Kong with a photo taken at dawn, using vibrant colours and verticality, illustrating the number and variety of the skyscrapers found in the megalopolis. On the other hand, he chooses black and white to capture New York’s Chrysler Building, in order to enhance its simplicity amid the city’s complexity.

The artist

Alex Teuscher is a purely self-taught photographer, who started – as did many others – after simply receiving a camera as a gift. It was a rather judicious choice on his father’s part, because now, Alex Teuscher is a renowned photographer who works with the biggest magazines and most famous brands in the world of luxury goods, jewellery, tourism, and cars. Born in 1982 and based in Geneva, we would not be surprised to learn that he also exercises his talents in luxury watchmaking, notably as artistic director of Haute Time, an American magazine specialising in luxury timepieces. In parallel, he develops personal projects that lead him to travel the world. An inveterate jack-of-all-trades, he is just as comfortable in the middle of a megalopolis like New York or Hong Kong (“the most photogenic city ever,” he says) as in the back of beyond, in the Namibia Desert or at the Temple of Angkor. While he is comfortable in colour, he likes to use black and white against the grain, as in his series on the Swiss Alps: “They are even more beautiful with a monochrome look,” he exclaims.  ...
