The artist

Raf Willems reveals the world from a new angle. A Belgian artist based in the United States, he has practised the profession of photographer since 1997. Armed with his long experience, he is internationally renowned for his work in the advertising industry. However, when his career was already well established, several years ago, he decided to embark on a new challenge. As soon as they appeared on the market, he bought his first drone. It was love at first sight: the photographer became passionate about aerial photography! This European expat living in the United States brings fresh eyes to his surroundings. What seems ordinary to Americans often appears special to the artist. The use of the drone is therefore a way for him to share this impression, a vector of communication offering a new perspective to the public, seen from above. Today he is among the pioneers of aerial photography. A winner of numerous international awards (First Prize at the International Photography Competition; gold medal at the International Color Awards; three One Eye Land Awards, IPA, etc.), his photographs are also exhibited across the globe. Finally, he has founded an agency specialising in aerial photography, based in Las Vegas. Besides commercial assignments, Raf Willems devotes his time to many personal art projects, but never without his drone.  ... See more See less

About the artwork

Dry Lake Bed, not far from Las Vegas, is a deserted spot famous for the many photo and film shoots it attracts. Embedded in collective memory, this landscape seems to have no more secrets for anybody, and yet, photographer Raf Willems doesn’t approach it in the same way. He takes his drone to the site, sees it from above and suddenly, the magic operates. The desert reveals itself in a new light, expressing new aspects to the public.
