About the artwork

The city of Larung Gar is located in the Tibetan part of the Chinese province of Sichuan. Particularly photogenic, with its red houses and position at 4 200 metres of altitude, it is above all a high temple of Buddhist culture and teaching. In the summer of 2016, the Chinese authorities decided to reduce its population by 20 000 to 5 000 residents and ordered the expulsion of thousands of monks and residents.

The artist

Florian Delalee is self-taught. An employee of an industrial company, he was initiated into photography by his former manager. Aged 21, on a mission to Shanghai, China, he bought his first digital reflex camera and set out to discover the hinterland. Now living in China long term, he escapes his professional industrial world to travel throughout Asia as soon as he can: “ I’ve been criss-crossing Asia for a decade now, looking for places off the beaten path to bring back souvenirs and a photographic experience of the magnificent landscapes and people that I meet, ” he explains. “ Every time, I try to improve my compositions and plays of light, notably at sunrise and sunset. ” Among his inspirations feature photographers such as the American Steve McCurry or the young Romanian Mihaela Noroc, who notably published The Atlas of Beauty . Florian Delalee also explains that he is very fond of National Geographic reportages and their ability to “ inspire globetrotters to continue to explore further ,” directly echoing his own photography practice.  ...
