The artist

This 40 year old photographer is an architect by profession. There are signs of this in his work as it is first of all a reflection on contemporary cities and more specifically aboutthe proliferation of modern urban space. Laurent Dequick’s purpose is to accurately convey an impression of frenzy which results from a density of population and activity in urban areas: « Along the streets, the lights, the noise, the traffic, the swarms of pedestrians, the blend of smells, are so fascinating that no single shot can entirely capture it. Do choices have to be made? I don’t think so: I don’t want to… »To translate this urban life congestion into an image, the photographer does not shy away from the juxtaposition, superposition or inlaying of shots. With the same intensity he overlaps photographs representing architectural complexes, main traffic routes and people. He condenses the images like the city condenses the sum of its inhabitants’ lives. About the artwork

Laurent Dequick once again moves away from the traditional representation that we have of landscapes around us in order to present a highly poetic vision. As an eye-witness of the contemporary city, he knows its slightest fluctuations and it is on his escapades around the world that he captures many of the monuments, settings, and sites that have been the undisputed witnesses of history and of the radiating influence of the countries he traverses. This image is taken from his 2017 series on the city of Beijing. Laurent Dequick captures one of the most emblematic monuments of the Chinese capital, the Meridian Gate (Wu Men) that serves as the entrance to the Forbidden City. Made of walls in purple brick, crowned by yellow varnished tiles, the gate is surrounded by the ?river with golden water? that must be crossed by one of the 5 marble bridges, each symbolising a Confucian virtue: goodness, honesty, wisdom, decorum, and loyalty.
