About the artwork

Marie-Laure Vareilles has photographed people throughout the world for about thirty years. Nowadays, she uses this photographic corpus to create original montages. Her objective is that “each montage becomes a story that each individual can appropriate to invent their own scenario,” always with the desire to highlight men and women of all origins and question “the uniformity of culture and thought worldwide”.

The artist

Marie-Laure Vareilles was born in 1966. After studying interior architecture and working as a graphic designer for a technical magazine, she decided, aged 36, to dedicate her time to her first love: art and photography. She travels extensively, particularly in Asia and takes photos that she assembles as montages on her return, inspired by her encounters and filled with poetry. These landscape montages made her famous. “I try to create the most realistic imaginary landscapes possible,” she explains, “I want spectators to invent their own story as they look at them, so that the photomontage comes to life according to each individual’s imagination.” Nowadays, Marie-Laure Vareille’s work takes the various forms of photo books, large-format prints, magazines, or even clothing collections! She exhibits in both the United States and Vaison-la-Romaine, the village in the south of France where she continues to live and compile her photos when she returns from her travels. Questioned as to the three things that are essential in life, she replied “creativity, passion, and… a computer!”  ... See more See less

CLAUDE DEGOUTTE

“The wall belongs to the ‘retards’, ‘inept’, ‘rebels’, ‘simpletons’, to all those with a big heart. It is the blackboard of the school of life,” says French-Hungarian artist Brassaï in his famous back Graffiti. A veritable ode to urban art, Brassaï’s reflection was to mark the a...
