About the artwork

Yakovlev & Aleeva’s portfolio is characterised by striking, unique images created according to various stylistic influences. By focusing on women’s beauty and glamour, the Russian photography couple photographs their subjects wearing traditional garments to create an intense collection of visuals. Dramatic and seductive, their images combine haute couture and traditionalism to offer a new perspective. In this image, Yakovlev & Aleeva photograph a modern beauty dressed in an extremely colourful dress. Reflected in a mirror, she appears mysterious and enigmatic. None of the compositional details appear to be chosen by chance. The artist couple’s subjects are thus illustrated through the juxtapositions that they establish with art history and through original and sophisticated stagings.

The artist

Subjects ranging from classical painting to Dutch still life, all of which focus on haute couture: the Russian artist couple Andrey Yakovlev and Lili Aleeva (Yakovlev & Aleeva) have acquired an international reputation by creating stagings that stand out through their creativity and aestheticism. Each of them – now romantic, now modernist and realistic – manages to showcase various facets of femininity. Based in Moscow, this artist duo has worked together since 1997, with one devising unique environments as an artistic director, while the other handles the shooting. Their sophisticated style of images notably led to them winning the gold medal at the Trierenberg Super Circuit in 2011 and first prize at Moscow’s advertising photography competition “Profit” in 2006.  ...
