About the artwork

By immortalising wild animals in their natural habitat and then working on the lighting in postproduction to display them against a neutral backdrop, Pedro Jarque aims to help break down the barrier that we have built over the centuries concerning our relationship with the animal kingdom. The play of light and shade thus allows the necessary atmosphere to be created to approach the animals emotionally. It has been suggested that our contemplation of animals has always represented a means of reflecting on the origins of humanity, as a kind of mirror of ourselves. This is part of the Western idea that affirms that, during our evolution, the human species became isolated from the natural realm that defines animals and their behaviour. Through his remarkable series of portraits, photographer Pedro Jarque strives to reconstruct our view of these wild animals by restoring some of the dignity that has been usurped from them.
