About the artwork

Paris, 2012. The Femen organise a happening at the Louvre, at the foot of the Venus de Milo. Before this symbol of femininity, the feminist activists denounce the violence perpetrated against Tunisian women, raped by police in Tunisia. In tribute to the movement and the victims, artist Justine Coquidé dresses up Aphrodite in her old jewellery and endows her with endless confidence. As a Femen activist, she appears more powerful and robust than ever.

Nine years ago, almost to the day, the feminist association Femen protested at the foot of the Venus de Milo in the Louvre Museum.  They were protesting about the ongoing proceedings in Tunisia against a woman raped by several policemen.
