About the artwork

Marie-Antoinette is said to have spoken the words: “If they do not have bread, let them eat cake!” at the height of the French Revolution. The subject of photographer Eli Rezkallah's wild portraits, the sultry queen in question has lost none of her flippancy. However, it is no longer cake but rather chewing gum and pizza. Anachronisms to denounce the excesses of our time?

Eli Rezkallah retranscribes the image he had of the female figures who marked his childhood and his current life. He conveys the image of a strong woman, free of her rights and who is fearless.
