About the artwork

Born in Frankfurt in 1955, Bernhard Hartmann began his artistic career at the age of 18 as a press photographer for a major German newspaper. Self-taught, he studied art and later became a landscape photographer. He owes his success to his breathtaking representations of historical buildings that are entirely dedicated to culture and devoid of their spectators. On his travels, he also ponders the meaning and heritage value applied to old abandoned buildings, such as this admirable photograph of an old tepidarium.

Anecdote

In ancient Rome, a tepidarium was the part of the thermal baths where one could take warm baths. It was the necessary link between the hot and cool areas of the thermal establishment.
