The artist

Since 2000, Jules Valentin has been passionate about photography and strives to capture his maritime meanderings through his lens. He never thinks twice about sailing into the open sea to explore the calm and the stormy. In his personal projects, he orders and assembles photographs of his chosen locations, featuring a palette of rare and intense silver hues. The sight of them evokes a kind of fresh coastal breeze, the movement of the sea, or a shift and then freezing of time. With a deep admiration for the British photographer, Michael Kenna, Jules Valentin explores his fading and ethereal seascapes in a new way. Just like his mentor, and just as strikingly, he uses his lens to reveal the universal power of nature and the elements: stars in motion hanging over the calm and turbulent ocean, the wind brewing the clouds and hurtling the waves.  ... About the artwork

Born in Brittany and professing a profound admiration for British photographer Michael Kenna, in his own way, Jules Valentin explores a landscape in which the picturesque tends to be effaced. Like his mentor, the universal power of nature and the elements are revealed before his lens. Here, he continues his exploration by photographing urban landscapes. In this photograph, we spy the Yellow Titan crane built in 1954. Listed as a historic monument in 2018, it is one of the key elements of infrastructure on the island of Nantes.
